The Prince and Me
Deception
Figure 13-1
Edvard, the prince of Denmark, is very rebellious. After a fight with his parents, he decides to go to a college in Wisconsin without his family's help. In Wisconsin, Edvard meets Paige Morgan, a local farm girl. Edvard needs help with learning how to keep a job so he can pay for expenses. Paige needs help with her Shakespeare class. They help each other with their struggles.
During Thanksgiving break, Paige brings Edvard to her home. The two become romantically interested in each other. When Paige and Edvard return to the university, some paparazzi find them kissing. Edvard is forced to tell Paige that he is a prince. Paige is upset with Edvard for not informing her of this earlier.
Edvard had deceived Paige by not telling her about him being a prince. According to Guerrero, "Concealment or omission involves omitting information one knows is important or relevant to a given context (Buller & Burgoon, 1994; O'Hair & Cody, 1994; Turner et al., 1975)."24 Edvard did not lie to Paige, but he did use concealment. He knew the fact that he was a prince was important information to share with Paige.

Justification
Figure 13-2
Edvard has to go back to Denmark due to his father becoming ill. Paige figures out that she is in love with Edvard and travels to Denmark to find him. Edvard's mother disapproves of the couple, but Edvard does not back down. After Paige's excitement settles down a little, she comes to realize that she is not ready to settle down. She wants to finish school and travel. Paige ends her relationship with Edvard by using justification.
Guerrero states, "Unlike the direct dump, justification acknowledges the need to provide a rationale for the breakup to one's partner."25 Paige tells Edvard her reason for ending the relationship and he is very understanding. After Edvard becomes king and Paige graduates from college, the two are reunited and pick up where they ended it before.
