To get what you want...
Figure 7-2
Cady Heron and her parents lived in Africa when she was a young girl. When they move back to the states, Cady is able to make a lot of similarities between high school students and the animals of the jungle. The Plastics are the "popular" girls of the school. They find an interest in Cady and invite her to join their clique. To avenge her friend who was humiliated years ago by the Plastics, Cady agrees to join in order to find a way to humiliate and destroy the leader of the Plastics, Regina George. Also, it helps that Cady has fallen for Regina's ex-boyfriend and wants to find a way to win him over.
Cady was encouraged to become part of the clique in order to get several things she wanted. This would be classified as an instrumental goal; one of three Goals in Relationships developed by Canary & Cody (1994). Guerrero's definition of instrumental goals given is that "instrumental goals are task oriented".12 By becoming part of the Plastics, Cady is able to get closer to completing her goals by associating with Regina's ex-boyfriend and find ways to "destroy" Regina.

Behavioral Goals
Figure 7-3
There are three main members of the Plastics. Regina George is the leader. She makes the rules while the others follow without question. Gretchen Wieners is Regina's right hand lady. Even though Gretchen does not agree with all of Regina's ways, she would rather be included and be miserable than to not be included. Finally, there is Karen Smith who is simple minded and easily manipulated by others.
Schutz's Fundamental Interpersonal Orientation Theory includes behavioral control as one of its three parts. Behavioral control is described as "the third basic interpersonal need revolves around the desire to feel control in one's life" (Schutz 1958).13 Behavioral control splits people into three categories: democrats, abdicrats, and autocrats. Democrats are those who do not want to control everything but do not want to be controlled either. There are no democrats in the Plastics.
Abdicrats are those who prefer to be controlled in a relationship. Both Gretchen and Karen can be classified as abdicrats. After Cady gets Regina kicked out of the clique for breaking one of the rules, Gretchen and Karen decide Cady should be in charge and follow her around everywhere.
Regina is an autocrat. An autocrat is one who feels they never have enough control in a relationship. Regina's goal is to make everyone she encounters to feel like they are beneath her. Cady begins the movie as a democrat. She then has to be more of an abdicrat when she first joins the Plastics. The longer amount of time Cady spends as one of the plastics, she becomes more of an autocrat.
