A Variety of Relationships
Figure 11-2
John and Max have fought with one another since they were children. John is also the closest thing to Max's best friend; and the other way around. Even though the two of them fight a lot, Max and John always seem to get over their fights. According to Leslie Nussle, "a variety of relationships are essential in our adult years."19 Aside from their strange friendship, John and Max have a variety of other relationships present in their life.
John has a daughter from his first marriage. He also has a granddaughter. John's dad is still living. John has been married for a second time. His second marriage is deep and soulful. John also owns a cat.
Max has a son from his first marriage. He also owns a dog. Max becomes involved with an Italian woman, who is new to town. They eventually get married at the end of the movie. For both Max and John, their most important relationship is their family.

Getting Too Involved
Figure 11-3
Melanie, John's daughter, and Jacob, Max's son, got together after Melanie's first marriage fell apart. Max and John are thrilled for them. Max and John get too involved in the wedding planning. Even though Melanie and Jacob do not agree with some of Max and John's suggestions, they do not say anything about it.
According to Leslie Nussle, "when their (elders) suggestions are not followed they may feel they are no longer being respected."20 Jacob and Melanie fear the idea of disrespecting their parents so they do not say anything when they disagree. Then the stress becomes too much for either of them, so they call the wedding off. Jacob and Melanie take time away from each other. After a while, the two of them get back together and get married.
